Nyköping Community, SWEDEN
The Challenge: The energy usage of the Community’s facilities (schools, retirement homes, offices, a heated swimming pool, and industrial sites) was too high and the staff had no control over lowering it. The Community wanted to improve the comfort levels of its facilities as well as to reduce their energy consumption by 10% from 2006 but had no budget for a full facilities modernization.
The Solution: An energy services company – member of eu.bac – offered the Community an EPC covering 123 of its buildings totaling an area of 257,000 m2. Improvements include the installation of a Building Management System in all buildings, new heat pumps and solar panels, sensor-controlled lighting and heating/cooling, etc.
The Results and Benefits: the project resulted in a 21% cut in the Community’s energy bill (saving 4,300 tonnes of CO2 each year) as well as savings on maintenance.

IBM, UK The Challenge: in order to comply with its stated corporate policy of “ensuring the responsible use of energy throughout our business” IBM wanted to (in short) achieve a 4% corporate energy conservation target at no extra cost.
The Solution: with the help of an energy services company – member of eu.bac – IBM was able to develop long-term solutions in intelligent energy procurement and waste reduction, as well as launching an internal campaign to educate and persuade employees to reduce their energy consumption.
The Results and Benefits: IBM conserved 52,764 MWh of energy in 2002, reduced its CO2 emissions by nearly 38,000 tonnes over two years, and achieved a 45% reduction in waste in 2001. 41 IBM UK sites now use 100% green energy, and the company has been accredited by the National Energy Foundation for demonstrating its commitment to higher environmental standards.
